Our Story
Providing Hope Since 1988
In 1988, Community Women Against Hardship (CWAH) was co-founded by the late Gloria L. Taylor and the late Betty J. Lee. Taylor, while reading a report about the poverty line in the City of St. Louis, joined Lee, a respected journalist, in providing educational and developmental programs for families.
CWAH is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, volunteer-based organization dedicated to serving low to moderate income families in the City of St. Louis. Since 1988, CWAH has provided services to over 9,000 men, women, and children.
The CWAH Family Support Center, purchased from the City of St. Louis for just $1 and renovated with over $800,000 in donations and 30,000+ volunteer hours, houses a library, computer lab, music laboratory, clothing boutique, food pantry, and warehouse of donated goods.
Through the Parent Opportunity Program and Student Enrichment Program, CWAH offers free educational and developmental classes to parents and children (5th through 12th grade), focusing on job readiness, nutrition, family relationships, and personal growth.

In Loving Memory
Lew Barnes was the heart and soul of the CWAH golf tournament. As the co-founder and leader of the tournament committee, he dedicated years of his life to building this event into the beloved tradition it is today.
His passion for community service, his infectious enthusiasm on the course, and his unwavering commitment to helping others inspired everyone around him. Though he has passed, his legacy lives on through this tournament and the lives it continues to touch.
His wife, Carolyn Barnes, continues to be a pillar of the committee, carrying forward his vision and dedication. This 20th anniversary tournament is a celebration of everything Lew built and believed in.
"Rooted in community. Elevated by excellence."
